WE WANT TO REACH THE GOVERNMENT OF SIERRA LEONE TO BAN THE PRACTICE OF FGM IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.
Female Genital Mutilation is also known as cutting (FGM/C) is a practice carried out in the entire country.
The practice is usually carried out on young girls between the ages of 7 and 15 years. There are several harmful effects associated with this practice. However, local traditional leaders including female societal heads may not be aware of the long term harmful effects. They consider the practice as a custom or cultural tradition which should be handed down from generation to generation as it has been the case.
Males shy away from even discussing it as it is mystified to an extend that when men venture to discuss it, the harmful effects are translated into a very serious male genital dysfunctional disease. Also, that bad omen will befall the male who speaks about FGM/C. All myths of course!

Among many unannounced incidents over the years especially death, on Monday 20th December 2021, a 21-year-old woman was found dead in a Bondo Bush at Nyandeni village, Imperri Chiefdom, Bonthe District. It was reported that the late Maseray Sei was found dead at approximately 4: 30am having allegedly bled to death after undergoing FGM/C, an initiation with other young women.
As a collective, we totally condemn the Act!
Through the use of crude weapons on women and girls, the cruel impacts of FGM/C include excessive bleeding, death, early marriage and teenage pregnancy, school dropout, accumulation of STDs, fistula, mental and emotional injuries, infertility and childbirth complications etc.
As an organization working on the safety and general well-being of especially women and girls, our hope is to totally eradicate FGM in Sierra Leone, to improve women and girls’ access to formal education, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, mental and emotional well-being, family education, and to also minimize early girl child marriage, teenage pregnancy, death and female oppression.
In doing so, Her Future Foundation and A Girl At A Time are seeking 1000 signatories from individuals, families, communities, community-based organizations, youth-led groups, local NGOs, International NGOs, Government Ministries, Donors, UN Agencies, to be part of the history-making venture, severing as a witness to end FGM/C in Sierra Leone.
The 1000 signatories including yours (please be a part, don’t be left out) will be used to approach appropriate NGOs, Donors, UN Agencies and key Embassies to amplify their support in ending FGM in Sierra Leone and to also approach stakeholders and the government, in strengthening the implementation of the existing laws that ban the practice of FGM in Sierra Leone.
